Name: KY Physiographic Regions Simplified

Display Field: Region

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: Standard physiography is based on the landforms that are characteristic of a region, which are strongly influenced by the underlying rock units. This also strongly influences groundwater occurrence. This shapefile has taken the original physiographic regions of Kentucky and modified them to better designate hydrogeologic characteristics. The Inner Bluegrass, Outer Bluegrass and Knobs regions have been consolidated into a single “Bluegrass Region” due to the similarity of rock units and aquifers. Likewise, the Eastern and Western Pennyroyal have been combined into a single “Mississippian Plateau” Region to denote the similarities across that area. Due to the unique nature of the deposits and wide use of the aquifer, the “Ohio River Alluvium” has been added as its own separate region.
